Alias: Dragon
Marrisel Galaxy Most Wanted Priority: #4
Crime: The "Thief Lord" of the Capitol Thieves' Court of Exxa, Reyma. Aside from him being pretty much an organized crime leader in Exxa, he is also known as a dangerous revolutionary and one who actively distributes anarchist propaganda and who is actively advocating an overthrow of the Galactic Council. He is also very brutal and quite merciless, killing any who dare to oppose him--he is estimated to have killed over 600 people merely on suspicion that they would oppose him.

Basic Statistics

Name: Aram satak'Lin (pronounced: ah-RAHM sah-tek-LEEN)
Nickname: Was known, until being taken in by Azka ma'Treijah at 78 Rikh, as "Maz sal'Kintha". Prior to that, he does not remember what his name was.
Meaning of name: Aram = "Iron". satak'Lin = "from [the] sky"
Origin of name: He was orphaned at a very young age and never could remember what name his birth parents had given him. He was later found scavenging by Pilarren sal'Kintha, a Exxam Ra woman living in the slums of the Capitol City, who took him in as an adoptive son. When she asked his name, he looked down at the fruit he was eating (a melon-like fruit called "mazkir") and said "Maz." Later on, Pilarren disappeared--she went out to scavenge some dinner for them and never returned, and it is assumed that either a shopkeeper killed her (thinking she was trying to steal) or another slum-dweller killed her for the food she was carrying. Later, Azka ma'Treijah took Maz in after a couple of his men found Maz trying to steal from the Court House. When he was caught, one of them wanted to "beat some sense into him" but the other pointed out that Maz looked like he was probably starved half to death, so they should feed him, and that he obviously had Gyllei blood, so the Thief Lord might find him personally interesting. Azka (also half-Gyllei) wound up adopting Maz, who he renamed Aram satak'Lin at a later time once he'd fully come to appreciate his gifts as a blacksmith (hence the name Aram, "Iron") and his habit of spacing out and watching the clouds instead of listening (hence the tongue-in-cheek joke of his last name, satak'Lin, "from the sky"). Aram loved his new name and wound up naming his sword-fighting style "Sky Iron" as a tribute to his mentor's jokes.

Describe their smile:

Feet:
Tattoos/Scars? Two circular dots branded over his eyebrows near the bridge of his nose (mark of the Thief Lord). Knuckles branded with an iron (mark of a Street Soldier). Two long, linear scars across his face (one spanning from the outer edge of his left eyebrow to just below the inner corner of his right eye; the other, spanning from about an inch to the left of his nose, over the right corner of his mouth, to his right jaw) from his battle with Shadow. Scattered other combat-related scars. A "Gyllei Seal" tattooed onto each of his wrists (how he moves his dragons in and out of his body). His dragons (when not in use) appear like tattoos on his skin, but will occasionally move. Also has two stones drilled through his nose--they are like piercings but go through skin, cartilage and bone. One is on the bridge of his nose, right between his eyes. The other is on the arc of his nose, just above the cartilage. Two other similar "piercings" through each palm--they do not puncture bone but go straight through each hand. The stones are black, polished, reflective stone rods. These "piercings" he did himself after "The Darkest Day" (when his wife Eyaliat was killed, his daughter Yalil went missing and was believed murdered, he accidentally killed his apprentice Khyorali in his rage and grief, and his other apprentice Lilikhan turned on him--see "Shadow")--the two on his nose to represent Eyaliat (upper) and Yalil (lower), and the two in his hands to represent Khyorali (his apprentice, advisor and friend on the left, with an eye carved into the flat end of the stone, representing Khyo's "All-Seeing Eyes") and Lilikhan (his apprentice, strongest warrior, chosen successor, and closest friend on the right, with the crest of the Tazikmier-Kalahanta clan on the flat end of the stone). His gloves usually cover the piercings of his hands, but the piercings on his face always show.
Glasses/Contacts? None
Left/Right handed? Is right-hand dominant, but is almost equally skilled with his left.
Distinguishing features:

Other outfits one might find in their wardrobe:
Jewelry: He has 14 piercings total--the two on his nose (see "Tattoos/Scars?"), the two in his hands (see "Tattoos/Scars?"), five in his left ear, and three in his right ear. Each of his piercings has a story. The four that are on his nose and hands are representative of four great losses in his life on the day that his former life ended and he became "The Dragon" rather than "The Thief Lord"--the death of his wife, the death of his advisor and close friend, the assumed death of his daughter (see "Wander"), and the loss of his closest friend and chosen successor (see "Shadow"). On his left ear, the first (in his lobe) was done by Azka ma'Treijah, his mentor and friend, who did it in the Gyllei tradition (since both were half-Gyllei)

Family (that they have created, if at all)

Partner(s): Eyaliat sal'Taig (†)
Is this their first marriage/family?: It was, but he is widowed.
If it was a death, what happened, and when?: When Aram and Eyaliat's daughter, Yalil, was very young (Earth equivalency would be about 1 year old), Eyaliat assured Aram that she'd sufficiently recovered from childbirth and he was safe to go back to training Lilik and Khyo. Shortly after he left, she was putting their daughter in her crib and heard a sound outside. She glanced through the curtains and saw three unfamiliar men in the alley outside of the house, attempting to break down the back door. She quickly grabbed her combat gear (dagger, blowpipe and poisoned darts, caltrops, etc.) and crept into the hall, hiding in a doorway. She scattered caltrops on the top few stairs when she heard them coming towards the stairs, hoping to slow them down. She was shocked when they didn't go up the stairs, but instead broke through the floor between herself and the stairs and clambered up through the floor. The three men (although she did not know this) were Fae'Aesam (Tzerra), Khay Sol (Pain), and Lore (a Siren and a former enemy of Tzerra's, who was temporarily resurrected by Pain to assist in the kidnapping). Tzerra said, "Eyaliat sal'Taig…one of the last living descendants of the legendary Ataylo Kalahanta, as well as the only descendent of the mystic Kannabhi. It is quite incredible to see you in the flesh. You are indeed a sight." Eyaliat was alarmed by the fact that they knew who she was (when she had no clue who they were, and even her husband didn't know of her ancestry), and immediately began preparing to hypnotize them. Pain then said, "Don't look too long. She has the Dreamwalker's Gaze, remember. But as long as you don't look at her, it cannot affect you. Besides, we didn't come here for her." Eyaliat was frightened that he knew exactly how to counter her chief ability and even more alarmed by the fact that they had not come looking for her--meaning that they had come for her daughter. She yelled "Don't go near my daughter! I'm warning you!" and held her dagger high, planting herself in the doorway of the bedroom. Pain chuckled and said, "Stay out of this, you foolish girl--this is not your battle. If you do not interfere, you will be allowed to survive. If you try to stop us, the consequences will be far worse than you imagine." She could tell they were not looking at her (to avoid her hypnosis ability) and decided to use this against them, raising the dagger to fight them. Lore (being controlled by Pain) used the sound of her own voice as his weapon (see "Siren Magic") and threw Eyaliat against a wall. The three then advanced into the room and moved towards Yalil's crib. Eyaliat struggled to her feet and ran at them with the knife held high as Tzerra reached into the crib. Lore detected her approach through the sound of her feet on the floor and spun, stabbing her in the chest. She struggled to try to reach Tzerra, intending to kill him before he was able to touch Yalil--but Lore forced her backwards, and she soon fell unconscious from the blood loss. Before she fell unconscious, the last thing she saw was Tzerra lifting a crying Yalil--who was splattered with Eyaliat's blood--from the crib and move towards the door, and the last thing she heard was Pain saying, "We'd best move quickly. The Thief-Lord will be here soon." And to her: "You fool. If you had stayed out of the way, I wouldn't have had to hurt you. It is a terrible waste that you must die now." She then fell unconscious on the floor, and the three men left with Yalil. Aram arrived shortly thereafter to find her moments from death. She died as he tried desperately to save her.
Are they legitimately married? Yes and no. By the law of the Land of Exxa, they are not legally married--but by the Thieves' Court traditions, as well as by the Gyllei tradition, they are legitimately married. However, since the Thieves' Court is virtually a separate entity entirely from the Exxam government, this has never been an issue.
When did they get married? He was 221 Rikh, and she was 218 Rikh.
How did they meet? They were both friends and students of Azka ma'Treijah (former Thief-Lord and Aram's mentor). Azka mentioned to Aram that he would like to see him spar against Eyaliat, and talked Aram into going against her one round (although Aram objected to the idea of hitting a girl). However, Azka purposefully neglected to mention Eyaliat's primary fighting tactic (using hypnosis and illusions in battle to confuse, paralyze, and defeat enemies), curious to see if Aram would be able to counter it without hearing what it was first. When Aram first saw her, he thought she was beautiful, but shook the thought from his head, wanting to get the fight over with quickly. Aram and Eyaliat spoke briefly, addressing each other formally and noting how Azka obviously thought very highly of the other, until Azka chuckled and told them to leave the flattery for later and finish their match first. They bowed to begin the match, with Aram feeling briefly dizzy as he did so. Aram saw Eyaliat turn to Azka and remark that she didn't want  to fight Aram, lest she risk injuring his "handsome" face, and he heard Azka answer "Then don't swing at his face, Eyaliat." Eyaliat then turned to him and said "So it is, then. End this quickly?" He agreed and ran at her, planning to catch her off-guard with his extraordinary speed. She dodged and scattered caltrops around him, alerting Aram to the fact that she was a tactical fighter, who won by outsmarting her opponents rather than overpowering them through brute strength or speed. He reformulated his plan and attacked with a staff. She dodged his first swing, but he changed direction quickly and she was unable to dodge the second swing. When he struck her, there was a blinding light. He vaguely heard Azka laughing, "That's enough. I think we can call the fight over now, you two."--and the light cleared. He then woke up lying on his back, with Eyaliat standing over him, holding his own sword with the point at his throat. He was extremely confused until Azka told him the truth about Eyaliat's fighting style and the reason for the fight. He then thought back and realized (as Eyaliat laughed and offered him a hand up) that Eyaliat had placed the hypnosis on him as they first bowed in, and the entire fight as he'd seen it hadn't really happened--it had all been in his head. In reality, he had walked up to Eyaliat, handed her his sword, and fallen onto his back. He was angry at first. Eyaliat laughed, "I saw your fighting me in your head, though. If you can keep that pace in reality, you are quite impressive." and tossed his sword into the air, catching it with her other hand. As she handed it to him, she leaned in and whispered "Sorry, this was the only way I could do it without damaging your face. You have too nice a face for it to get all scarred-up." In spite of still being angry, he blushed as she smiled and walked away. Azka chuckled and said to Aram, once she was out of earshot, "You realize how heavily she was flirting with you, do you not?" Aram wanted to stay angry at her but found himself unable to. The next time he saw her, he offered to walk her home--he joked that it was so she could protect him, but really he just wanted to talk more to her, and she was aware of his intentions. After that, they were rarely apart from each other.
How did he propose, or how was she proposed to? When Azka died and Aram inherited the title of Thief-Lord, Eyaliat joked that since she'd beat Aram in their first sparring match, she'd expected Azka to leave her the title of Thief-Lord. Aram responded, half-joking, "We can share it if you want." He then said, in a more serious tone, "I want to share everything with you, Eyaliat. My life, my home, my family, everything. Will you share it with me? Will you marry me?" She burst into laughter (out of joy, not out of ridicule), tackled him to the ground in a hug, and said "I've been waiting for you to say that! Yes, of course I will!"
Children and their ages: Yalil satak'Lin (†)--daughter, was kidnapped by Tzerra and believed by Aram to be dead when she was 9 Rikh of age. However, unbeknownst by Aram, she was alive--her death came much later, when she was at the age of 78 Rikh. She was being tortured into using her ability as Tzerra demanded of her, opening a massive "crack" in the universe. The only way for it to be stopped was for her to be killed--however, Aram was the first one to find her, and, after realizing who she was, would not allow anyone to touch her. Things eventually got so desperate that Yalil forcibly broke away from him (not wanting her power to injure or kill him) and said "Please! You have to kill me--it's the only way to stop all of this! The crack starts with me, but it's not in my control anymore!" Shadow then tells Black Ice and Siren to restrain Aram while she "does what he cannot." She says "I'm sorry it has to be this way, Wander." and kills her, closing the crack immediately. It is only later that Shadow realizes that the girl she killed was, in fact, Yalil, Aram's daughter and her goddaughter (see "Volume 4: Emptiness").
How is the character treated by his child? Yalil is an infant when she is abducted, as such it's hard to comment on her relationship with her father. When she shows up again as "Wander", she takes a strong liking to Aram (in spite not knowing that he is her father) and says that he makes her feel safe. She tries not to get in his way but is also very attached to him.
How does this character treat his daughter? Although he had little time with her before her abduction and supposed death, Aram showed an intense love and protectiveness for Yalil. He was very tender with her and was a very doting father--it was actually very hard for him to get back to his duties as Thief-Lord, but Eyaliat insisted on it, saying "I have to put a bit of space between you two or you'll spoil her and I might get jealous."
Upon realizing that Wander is actually his daughter, his protective and loving tendencies resurface. He tells her stories when she's hurting or scared to help calm her and sings and rocks her to sleep. He refuses to let Shadow kill her, even though they all know the only surefire way to close the crack is to kill her, and is extremely protective of her, using stimulants to negate his need for sleep so that he can keep a constant eye on her and make sure none of his teammates tries to harm her while he's asleep. Shadow in particular is confused by this--she has grown used to seeing him as ruthless, cold-hearted, tough, and often cruel, so his displays of affection for Wander are baffling to her. She figures out later on who "Wander" really was, and is able then to make sense of and understand why he acted as he did. However, she then has to live with knowing she killed his daughter, and her goddaughter--even though it was a necessary action, it is extraordinarily hard for her to handle.

Additional Notes on This Character:
This profile is very incomplete. I have notes contributing to it all over my house, but I've only typed up a little bit of it in profile form.

The characters, their roles in the story, and their respective backstories have evolved a lot since I first started conceptualizing this project; however, one thing has always been kind of constant, and that's the influence Dragon and Shadow have had on each other's lives. Because of that, I did wind up fleshing out their characters more quickly and completely than the others. I've gone back and forth about how to actually handle it in the story, but I'm fairly clear on it right now: Shadow's memories of her sister's death are hazy because she couldn't handle the knowledge that Dragon, whom she'd trusted for quite a long time, had killed her--so she blocks out the memories without realizing it. She also has completely suppressed all memories of Dragon's wife, Eyaliat, and daughter. These things come back to her bit by bit starting in Volume 2. Dragon's character transformed greatly after he lost Eyaliat, Yalil (his daughter), Khyorali, and Lilikhan (Shadow). He was, prior to that day, generally very cheerful and kind. He laughed often and liked to joke around and was much more forgiving and easy-going. He didn't become brutal, merciless, and cold-hearted until after he lost his family.
